President's Message 2008-2009

This year's CS Program at the ITEA Conference in Salt Lake City followed in the established tradition of providing a professional series of workshops, panel discussions, and sociable receptions. I especially thank the Steering Committee and Past President, Greg Kane, for the many hours spent to ensure the quality of this year's program. The Business Meeting / Awards Breakfast and workshops were well attended and had positive evaluations. The feeling at both the President's and Round Table Receptions were professional and friendly and we were delighted to have Educator-Astronaut Barbara Morgan join us at the CS Round Table Reception.

As we begin to prepare for ITEA Conference 2009 in Louisville, Kentucky, there are two general goals that the Steering Committee will concentrate on during the next year: membership growth and to develop a means for dynamic communication among CS members.

In order to increase membership, a multi-faceted plan will be developed. First, we need to concisely articulate who we are and what we do. Second, the Council for Supervisors is, in essence, a "leadership organization". As expressed in the CS Handbook, membership is open to all technology education leaders, and actually, to all STEM leaders. You know who these people are, in your state, school district, or school. As the membership plan develops, you will receive more information.

The issue of ongoing and dynamic communication is essential for us as we explore the meaning of the "T" and "E" in STEM and develop a consistent, yet flexible, national approach in implementing the Standards for Technological Literacy. We should not have to wait for the annual conference each year to discuss, question, and share effective practices. I rely on my colleges in Maryland, throughout the school year, for dialog, discussion, and planning in our common mission and the Council of Supervisors can provide this service for its membership on an international level.

Thank you for all that you do. You are, at heart, educators who have the best interest of all students foremost in your work and you consistently strive to serve all those whom you lead.

As we prepare for Louisville, Kentucky, the Steering Committee will keep you informed regarding our program plans. Look forward to seeing you there.
